UNHCR is looking for a dynamic and creative Intern to support the operation in youth engagement and enhancing adoption of Community-Based Protection approach. We are looking for someone who enjoys engaging in a conversation, enhancing multiple ways of communicating with different audiences, including refugees and host communities. The Intern will be working with the UNHCR and its¿ partners in Kigali with more attention to engage youths effectively and support them to pursue a better future. The Intern will be supporting the roll-out of youth-led projects in close cooperation with partners; this includes establishing youth groups, enhancing communication and feedback mechanisms, promote participation in youth-led initiatives, as well as recreational and educational activities, through the Community Centers and other venues.
The Intern is expected to support the UNHCR Global Youth Advisory Council (GYAC) initiative, through providing direct support to the partner involved in the project implementation. The Intern should proactively engage with multiple stakeholders and assist in defining the youth-led projects, follow up and monitor their smooth implementation.
As a member of UNHCR¿s Innovation Service and the Community-Based Protection Team, the Intern will adopt a values-based approach to innovation; we are looking for an intern who brings adaptability, transparency, humility, and eagerness to learn to their work and who will apply UNHCR¿s Age, Gender and Diversity Policy, as well as the principles of Accountability to Affected Populations. .

Under the direct supervision of Assistant Protection Officer (CBP), the Intern will support with the following tasks:
• Work in close cooperation with UNHCR staff and the NGO partners for the successful roll-out of the youth-led projects, enhance refugees¿ empowerment and assist them in addressing concerns of their own community and taking concrete initiatives towards finding solutions;
• Work in close cooperation with UNHCR Livelihood & PI sections to support and strengthen the development of capacity within the refugee youths groups through coaching, mentoring and on-the-job training;
• Through the promotion of effective community mobilization, work towards the activation and support the best use of the Community Centres in all locations with a focus on setting up effective mechanisms to reach out to youths, ensure their active participation in the design and implementation of centres¿ activities;
• Provide support to UNHCR Global Youth Advisory Council (GYAC) member, assist in the identification process and support his/her efforts in engaging and communicating with youths in all sites;
• Support the efforts made for enhancing the effective adoption of the Community-based approach in Rwanda. Ensure that Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD) perspective is systematically applied, integrated and documented in all youth activities;
• Support the implementation, monitoring, data collection and reporting on the various youth activities implemented during the reporting period;
• Enhance youth networking, communication and feedback mechanisms to serve the interest of the various refugee groups, respecting the involved diversity and population profiles;
• Enhance cooperation with the existing community structures, community leaders, the various refugee groups to enhance coordination and cooperation amongst the various actors active in the refugee settings;
• Carry out any additional tasks as set out by the supervisor including supporting & documentation adoption of innovation and non-traditional approaches;
• Assist in building a better understanding and engagement for innovation in the humanitarian sector, including the adoption of creative approaches for the use of technology for documentation and dissemination of good practices.

Eligible Applicants
In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
• Recent Graduate (those persons who completed their studies within one year of applying) or current student in a graduate/undergraduate school program from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO; and
• Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of the Organization.
• Should not have other paid employment (unless willing to leave if hired for this position)
The ideal candidate will:
• Have strong academic performance
• Demonstrate interest in the work of UNHCR
• Be a competent user of standard word processing and spreadsheet software
• Be fluent in English (written and spoken) is required, knowledge of Kinyarwanda or Swahili is an asset
• Be able to commit to a full-time position from July 2020 for a minimum of 6 months.
• Respect UNHCR¿s guidelines on confidentiality, UNHCR Code of Conduct and other UNHCR policies related to non-discrimination, Age, Gender and Diversity, Protection of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse and fraud
Additional Information
Status and Insurance
• Interns are not financially remunerated by UNHCR. Therefore, the internship agreement carries no financial obligations to UNHCR. However, the Intern will receive Food and Local Transportation Allowance (FLTA) equivalent of USD 500, paid in local currency.
• Interns may not represent UNHCR in any official capacity.
• Costs and arrangement for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of the Intern or his/her sponsoring institution. However, UNHCR will help with the visa application if applicable and advise accordingly.
• Interns are not subject to UN security evacuation procedures but may be assisted to leave the country when possible and to the extent feasible and on a reimbursable basis.
• UNHCR accepts on responsibility for the medical and life insurance of the Intern or costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during an internship. As interns are not covered under any insurance, including MAIP, they should not travel to hazardous locations in the course of their internship with UNHCR.
• Interns are fully responsible for arranging medical insurance covering the full internship period. UNHCR accepts no responsibility for any costs connected to medical insurance of interns. A copy of proof of valid medical insurance covering the period of the contract is required by UNHCR. UNHCR does not cover the costs of medical evacuation of interns; therefore, interns working in locations where medical facilities are inadequate are advised to ensure that their medical insurance covers emergency medical evacuation. Furthermore, the health insurance selected by interns should provide the necessary geographical coverage for both accident and illness.
Further Career Opportunities
• The purpose of internships is not to lead to further employment with UNHCR (no regular appointment can be granted for 6-month after completion of internship) but to complement an intern’s studies.
